Welcome from the Section Captain

The main event held and run in the Section remains the “Blue Marlin Classic” and there have been a host of valued sponsors over many years.

Past notable fishing greats who have fished the BMC have included the likes of Sir Garrick Agnew (who held the world record for catching marlin over 1000lb and the first person to catch a marlin in Australian waters over 1,400lb) and Neil Patrick who was responsible for introducing Halco Tackle onto the world market and is together with Sir Garrick is recognised in the International Game Fish Association’s ‘Hall of Fame.’

This past year the monthly formal meetings, which are held on the first Thursdays of the month, have been substituted with guest speakers presenting on topics as widespread as ‘knowing how to use your sounder to knowing how to get the best out of using a downrigger and dredge.

New members are always welcomed, and a non-formal “Snapper Competition” has been introduced to encourage members from other sections to see what fun of fishing can realize.

Monthly Meetings

Our section meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at Fremantle Sailing Club.

The History of the Fremantle Sailing Club Game Fishing Section

The Game Fishing Section was originally formed prior to the existence of the current Fremantle Sailing Club facilities and among the foundation Members were Peter Aspland, Brian Banovich and John Kilpatrick.

The section initially operated using a Fisheries ramp nearby and there were non-major interclub or ‘open’ events organised by the Section.

In 1978, post completion of the present Clubhouse, the same members mentioned above got together over a drink (or three) and during the discussion, it was realised that there was no specific marlin competition being held in Perth local waters by any other Perth based Club.
Thus began the process of formulating a specific marlin competition, modelled on Exmouth’s annual GAMEX Comp, which it is believed all those in the discussion had fished.

In 1978, the Club’s annual marlin game fishing event know ‘Blue Marlin Classic’ was born and to this day, 42 years later, it remains as one of the premier events on the local calendar.
