Junior Optimist Fleets (7-15)
Green Fleet
Once a sailor has completed a Learn to Sail course at FSC or another club, they and their parents are invited to join our most junior fleet. In this fleet, sailors gain access to additional coached training and skills development, as well as the beautiful facilities. Green Fleet members can use Club-owned Optimists during their training sessions. Here, sailors will develop foundational skills and learn how to navigate a basic course.
Intermediate Fleet
After progressing from the Green Fleet and purchasing their own boat for racing, sailors become part of Team Freo. Team Freo has a long legacy of producing champions, with many accomplished sailors emerging from its ranks. In this group, sailors will begin participating in Club racing, using their own fiberglass Optimist. The Intermediate Fleet is designed to prepare sailors for the more advanced Open Fleet. The mission is to help sailors gain self-reliance and acquire the skills necessary to succeed in local regattas.
Open Fleet
Sailors in the Open Fleet focus on developing and refining critical boat-handling skills, physical and mental stamina, and the abilities needed to excel in national and international competitions. Building on what they learned in the Intermediate Fleet, these sailors participate in longer practices that expose them to a wide range of wind and ocean conditions, requiring high levels of maturity, focus, and dedication. Open Fleet sailors will also work on developing team racing skills.
Youth Fleets (15-23)
The Youth classes sailed at the club are ILCA4, ILCA6, 29ers and IQ Foil
Once a sailor is ready to transition out of their junior class, they have many different options to choose from for their youth sailing.
It’s important to remember that this choice is not forever and moving between all the different types of boats is both normal and good for building a well-rounded knowledge of sailing.
