Learn to Sail Youth
Get your Kids on the Ocean!
This Learn to Sail course is perfect for young teens who want to try sailing in a non-competitive, social and fun setting. The course involves sailing on small sailing boats with two or three participants on board. No previous sailing experience is required and all equipment is provided. The course runs as a 12-hour course typically during the School Holidays.
All courses are run by qualified Australian Sailing Instructions.
Before making a booking, please note the following:
To make a booking for a course, an Australian Sailing (AS) Number is required for each participant.
If you’re not sure whether the participant already has an AS number or to learn more about AS numbers, please click here.
If the child does not have an AS number, simply click on the ‘Sign Up‘ button when making the booking.
IMPORTANT: When booking a course for your child, please enter the child’s details as the course participant and not the parent’s/guardian’s. Otherwise your name may appear on your child’s certificate.
Only 1 participant per registration. If registering 2 or more participants, a separate registration for each is required.

Course Outcomes
- Weather introduction
- Learn how to set up your boat for sailing
- Understand points of sail to the wind
- Leaving and coming back to the beach
- Capsizing
- Sailing in a straight line
- Towing
- Tacking (turning the boat around)
- Teamwork and roles in the boat
This course will develop teamwork skills, get you outdoors and introduce you to new friends, all whilst learning the foundation skills of sailing. Like many sports, parents are an integral part of the learning and development process, they form a key link in the program and are encouraged to be involved from the outset. This course is the perfect opportunity for the family to decide if they would like to join the Club community.
What to bring
- Beach clothes – wear something that you don’t mind getting wet and will keep you warm on cold days. Swimming clothes such as board shorts, rash top and bathers, doubling up on layers if you can. A westuit is perfect if you have one.
- A change of clothes and shoes.
- Towel
- Drink bottle and snacks.
- Hat – to keep you warm and protest you from the sun.
- Sunscreen/zinc
