Freo OK Sailors with Danish fans!

Published On: June 9, 2026

While the temperatures are dropping, the racing calendar is heating up with some locals heading overseas, junior sailors braving the cold, and classic winter series keeping our local fleets sharp.

The international spotlight turns to Denmark this week for the massive 2026 OK Dinghy World Championship (5–12 June). Hosted jointly by the Royal Danish Yacht Club and Hellerup Sejlklub, this year’s event marks the 70th anniversary of the class. It has exploded into the second-largest OK Worlds in history, attracting an incredible 207 entries from 14 nations.

Representing Fremantle Sailing Club with pride, Scott Olsen and David Meehan have made the trek to Copenhagen to compete against Europe’s absolute best in Skovshoved Harbour, where they will navigate tricky, shifting Danish breezes, strong tides, and a heavily stacked 200+ boat fleet split into inner and outer trapezoid loops. Good luck to Scott and David—we will be tracking your scorecards from home!

Closer to home, the Team Freo Opti sailors made up over half of the open and intermediate fleets at Western Australian International Optimist Dinghy Association (WAIODA) Camp 2 at RFBYC over the weekend.  Open, Intermediate, and Green Fleet sailors braved chilly winter mornings to sharpen their boat handling and tactical awareness. Fundraising for the 20 young sailors heading to Melbourne for Nationals in January was prolific, with some great raffle prizes and some FSC canteen regulars behind the counter keeping young appetites at bay.

For those looking to keep their competitive edge sharp during the off-season, the legendary Huck Scott Winter Series is officially underway at Fremantle Sailing Club. First established in 1994, this iconic annual series honors Huck Scott’s massive, lasting contribution to dinghy sailing in Western Australia.

If you missed the opening date in May, don’t worry – the wind missed us too so you are sitting equal first!  Enter here – https://sailingresults.net/entry/default.aspx?ID=1969148
