Delivered as part of the school’s Year 8 elective rotations, SailLAB combines classroom learning with practical activities to introduce students to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts behind sailing.

Throughout the program, students explored a range of topics including measuring and understanding wind, interpreting weather charts, points of sail, hull design and the role of physical fitness in sailing. The unit concludes with students putting their knowledge into practice through hands-on sessions using remote-control sailboats.

Developed by Australian Sailing and aligned with the Australian Curriculum, SailLAB uses sailing as a platform to bring STEM learning to life, encouraging students to investigate, problem-solve and apply classroom concepts in a practical setting.

By connecting science and engineering with real-world sailing experiences, the program helps students develop a deeper understanding of how boats perform while fostering teamwork, critical thinking and an appreciation for the marine environment.

As a host venue for SailLAB, Fremantle Sailing Club is proud to support opportunities that introduce young people to sailing in a fun, practical and engaging way.
