Sailing Academy Sailors Shine on the International Stage
Fremantle Sailing Club’s Sailing Academy continues to demonstrate the strength of its athlete development pathway, with Academy graduate Matt Wearn and current Academy sailor Jasper Stay both delivering outstanding results on the international stage.
Matt Wearn strikes gold in Los Angeles

Two-time Olympic champion and Fremantle Sailing Club Academy graduate Matt Wearn has claimed victory in the Men’s ILCA 7 at the San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta, held in Los Angeles from 19–24 July 2026.
Contested on the waters that will host the sailing competition at the LA 2028 Olympic Games, the regatta provided athletes with a valuable opportunity to gain early experience on the future Olympic racecourse.
After six days of racing and a closely contested Medal Race, Wearn secured the overall win against a world-class fleet.
“It feels good to be winning at the Olympic venue, and hopefully we can keep doing that for the next two years,” Wearn said after the regatta.
The victory marks Wearn’s third consecutive Sailing Grand Slam win since returning to competition following his historic back-to-back Olympic gold medals.

Jasper Stay claims UK podium

Current FSC Academy sailor Jasper Stay has also impressed on the international stage, finishing 2nd overall and 1st Under 19 at the ILCA 6 UK Open & National Championships in Weymouth.
Competing in a fleet of more than 100 sailors from around the world, Jasper produced an exceptional finals series, winning three races to finish second overall in his first international regatta as a WAIS athlete.
The performance is an excellent lead-in to the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships, which will be held in Aarhus, Denmark, from 11–19 August, where Jasper will represent Australia.
Congratulations to Matt and Jasper on their outstanding achievements. Their success highlights the strength of Fremantle Sailing Club’s Sailing Academy and the pathways it provides for sailors to reach the highest levels of the sport.
