FSC Safe Marina 2026 | Shore Power Safety: Check Your Lead Before We Do
This week, FSC Safe Marina 2026 is focusing on shore power and the condition of electrical connections around the marina.
Marine electrical connections operate in a wet, salty and corrosive environment. Damage, poor contact, incorrect connectors and overloaded or coiled leads can create heat and arcing before a fault becomes obvious.
Before leaving your vessel connected, please check:
- The test-and-tag label is current and the lead is clearly identified.
- The lead is a single continuous marine-suitable lead with approved plugs and sockets – no household or double adaptors, unauthorised joins, taped repairs, cuts, crushing or exposed conductors.
- Plug pins and sockets are clean, dry and free from scorching, distortion or heavy corrosion.
- The lead is fully uncoiled, supported clear of the water and routed so it cannot be pinched or become a trip hazard.
- Connections are secure, weather-resistant and show no signs of overheating or unusual warmth.
- High-load appliances are not being added beyond the vessel and outlet capacity.
During pen checks, the Harbour team will be looking for these same issues. A connection presenting an immediate safety risk may be disconnected, and the member contacted regarding rectification. Technical repairs must be completed by an appropriately licensed person.
Your shore power lead must be fitted with the required 3-pin plug with a minimum IP56 rating. These plugs can generally be identified by their screw-locking ring, which helps provide a secure, weather-resistant connection.
Test & Tag Weekend – 19 & 20 September
To help members ensure their shore power leads meet Club requirements, FSC has arranged for a licensed electrician to be onsite at the VIP Lawn from 10:00 am–2:00 pm on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September.
Members can bring their existing shore power leads along for inspection and testing. Ready-made replacement leads in 10 m, 15 m and 20 m lengths will also be available if required, with custom lengths, repairs or modifications able to be discussed directly with the electrician.
Member Action for the Week:
Safely unplug your shore power lead and inspect its full length, including the plug and socket. If anything is damaged, corroded, scorched, warm or doubtful, bring it along to the Test & Tag Weekend or arrange testing or replacement before reconnecting.
Protect your boat. Protect your neighbour. Protect your Club.
