FSC Safe Marina 2026 | Battery safety Onboard: Charge with Care

Published On: September 21, 2026

For Week 3 of FSC Safe Marina 2026, we’re looking at battery safety and some simple checks that can help reduce the risk of overheating, fire and toxic smoke onboard.

Batteries store substantial energy, and incorrect chargers, damaged cells, poor connections, inadequate ventilation and unfused wiring can all create serious risks. Lithium-ion devices require particular care due to the potential for rapid thermal runaway and re-ignition.

This week, please check:

  • Use only the correct manufacturer-approved charger for the battery or device.
  • Do not charge damaged, swollen, wet, unusually hot or recalled batteries.
  • Charge on a stable, non-combustible surface away from sleeping areas, escape routes and flammable materials.
  • Avoid unattended or overnight charging, particularly for e-bikes, scooters, power tools and portable power packs.
  • Keep battery terminals protected, connections tight and wiring appropriately fused.
  • Ensure fixed battery compartments are ventilated as designed and free from loose conductive objects.
  • Keep battery isolation switches accessible.

During pen checks, the Harbour team will be looking for these same issues, including loose or unprotected terminals, temporary or unfused wiring, unattended charging, combustibles around chargers, damaged or swollen batteries, and clear access to isolation switches.

If a battery begins hissing, swelling, venting, smoking or heating rapidly, stop charging, keep people clear, raise the alarm and call 000. Do not take unnecessary risks trying to carry an unstable battery through the vessel or marina.

The correct response and extinguishing approach depend on the battery chemistry and conditions. Life safety and evacuation come first.

Member Action for the Week:

Identify every battery and charger onboard. Remove damaged equipment and relocate charging away from sleeping areas, escape routes and combustible materials.

Protect your boat. Protect your neighbour. Protect your Club.
