Fremantle Sailors excelled in the stronger conditions at Hempel World Cup Series

It was silver all round for Fremantle sailors Nia Jerwood & Monique De Vries (women’s 470 class) and Matt Wearn (Laser) at the Hempel World Cup Series – Round 1, Enoshima.

In the Women’s 470 class Nia & Monique capped off a solid week of sailing which saw the pair excel in the stronger conditions scoring a string of podium finishes as well as a win in Race 10 leaving them as overnight leaders heading into the double-points Medal Race. With a 3 point lead over the Spanish team, it set the scene for an epic Medal race in the light onshore breeze of around 5-6knots – some contrast to the conditions they had seen earlier in the week.

Unfortunately, the medal race didn’t go as planned for the pair with their Spanish rivals managing to pass the American team on the final downwind to leave Nia & Monique two places behind and one point shy of the overall regatta win. As it turns out, the wind failed to fill in leaving the officials no choice but to cancel the remaining medal races meaning that Fremantle member Matt Wearn would finish in 2^nd place in the Laser standard class.

This was another strong performance from Matt in the Laser class having finished 2^nd place at the 2019 World Championships and first overall at the 2019 Laser European’s earlier in the year.

Fremantle was well represented at the event with 11 sailors competing at the first round of the World Cup Series. Results as follows:

Zoe Thompson – 27^th Laser Radial

Elyse Ainsworth – 35^th Laser Radial

Chris Charlwood & Conor Nicholas – 19^th 470M

Amelia Stabback & Caitlin Elks  – 19^th 49er FX

David & Lachy Gilmour   – 14^th 49er

The sailors will now head home for some long overdue R&R before they gear up for the National Championships later in the year in Melbourne.
